Charles Filmore said if Unity has one cardinal teaching it is that the true spirit of God, to which we all should turn and listen, is within us. That idea leads to prayer and affirmations as the foundation of the Unity movement—and this is especially true at Unity Church of Mesilla Valley. Prayer doesn’t change God but changes us: brings our thinking and believing into alignment with God Truth. Besides prayer, we also spend time in meditation, giving the Still Small Voice (1 Kings 19:12) opportunity to speak to us. Unity Church of Mesilla Valley started as an expansion ministry under the Association of Unity Churches in Las Cruces on September 22, 2002 lead by Reverend Harriet Valliere who has since been honored with Unity's Myrtle Fillmore Award. When Reverend Harriet faced health challenges and had to step away from the work of building a church, Reverend Jane Waddington became our temporary leader until April 2004 when Reverend Terry Lund became our minister. Under Terry's guidance, on August 28, 2007 Unity Church of Mesilla Valley gained full church status. The Unity movement itself began over a century ago with Myrtle Fillmore working with the Five Fundamentals of Truth which led to her remarkable healing utilizing prayer and affirmations. Together Myrtle and her husband, Charles, then formed Unity prayer groups, and Silent Unity was soon founded. Unity went on to become a New Thought church which has since spread worldwide and includes the Unity Worldwide Headquarters' nondenominational publication of the Daily Word James Dillet Freeman calls those of us in the Unity movement, Unity Students—always seeking, questioning and practicing—Truth, God.
